I ran a Dungeons and Dragons campaign a number of years back in which the PCs were all pirates. I found combat aboard a ship to be extremely frustrating. The rules of DnD break down when you have a swarm of sea creatures crawling all over a (relatively) small area. Likewise when battling a gigantic sea creature like a Kraken!
So when I saw that Paizo Publishing solicited a Pirate Ship game mat, I was pumped! One side has ships next to each other for ship-to-ship combat, the other has the different decks in a ship. What's even better is that you can write on it with erasable marker. All this for $13! Now that's cool!
